Romania is a country of 18,326,327 people in Southeast and Central Europe. The country has an area of 238,397 square kilometres and borders on: Bulgaria, to the south; Serbia, to the southwest; Hungary, to the northwest; Ukraine, to the north; and Moldova, to the northeast. The southern border of Romania is marked by the Danube River that flows east into the Black Sea.
A member of the European Union, Romania is a relatively prosperous country with a per capita GDP (PPP) of $50,783 and a very high Human Development Index of 0.845.Romania has a high-income market economyand includes manufacturing, services, agriculture and resource extraction. In 2024, the top exports of Romania were: motor vehicles, vehicle parts and accessories, insulated wire, electrical control boards, and refined petroleum. The top destinations for exports were Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Hungary. In 2024, the top imports of Romania were, vehicleparts and accessories, assembled motor vehicles, packaged medications, crude and refined petroleum. The top countries of origin for imports were Germany, Italy, Hungary, China, and Poland.

Geological Setting of Romania

Several tectonic features define the geology of Romania:
Running down the middle of the country is the Carpathian Orogen; separated into the East and South Carpathian Mountains.
To the east and south of the Carpathian Mountains are stable platform rocks. To the north is Scythian Platform and to the south is the Moesian Platform.
Between the Scythian and Moesian platforms is the North Dobogrea Orogen.
Northeast of the Scythian Platform is the East European Platform, sometimes called the the Moldavian Platform in Romania and Moldova.
To the east of the Carpathian Mountains is the Transylvanian Basin and the Apuseni Mountains.
Further east, beyond the Transylvanian Basin and Apuseni Mountains is the Pannonian Basin.

Figure 3, above, shows the bedrock and surficial geology of Romania. The oldest rocks in Romania are from the Proterozoic and were formed during the Pan-African Orogeny. These rocks, whose formation records orogenic events up to the Neoproterozoic, are mostly exposed in the South Carpathians.
Mobile belts became active during the Paleozoic Era. These events formed the basement rocks of Scythian Platform and the metamorphic rocks of the Carpathian Mountains.
Tectonic rifting began during the early Mesozoic in what became the North Dobogrea Orogen. This rifting probably occurred along the Tornquist-Teysseire Lineament during the Triassic Period and separated Europe from the Preapulian Block, opening into the Tethys Ocean. As the the spreading of the Tethys Ocean continued, the Moesian Platform was rotated to the northwest and North Dobogrea was compressed. Concurrent with this tectonic compression in the area of the Carpathian Mountains, the ophiolite nappe formations in Transylvania were formed and became attached to, or obducted onto, the edge of the continent. The compressive events also led to the incorporation of the North Dobogrea Orogen into developing craton.
Subduction of the Tethys crust began during the Late Cretaceous and continued into the Neogene. Among the effects of this subduction was the formation of calc-alkaline volcanic deposits in the Apuseni Mountains. Also, as closure of the Tethys Ocean continued into the Paleogene, flysch deposits, alternating sand and claystones, were formed and which deformed during the Miocene. Other events included the development of molasse basins around the Carpathian Mountains, and the continuing deformation of the Moesian Platform.
Much of the surficial geology in Romania consists of Quaternary aged deposits. These deposits include: rocks and other deposits resulting from continuing tectonic movement; glacial deposits from Pleistocene glaciation in the Carpathians; and alluvial deposits from the Danube River system including the Danube Delta.

In 2025, a team of paleontologists (Gábor Botfalvai, Zoltán Csiki-Sava ,János Magyar, Barna Páll-Gergely, Levente Koczó, Daniel Ţabără, Gergő Konecsni, and Soma Budai) published a paper on a bonebed found in the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) aged Densuş-Ciula Formation from Transylvania in western Romania. Bonebeds record mass-casualty events from the past, as when animals are caught in a flash-flood, and their remains are buried together.
The bonebed in the Densuş-Ciula Formation yielded a rich collection of plant and animal fossils, including:
Microfloral fossils from approximately 62 terrestrial taxa;
Fossils of several freshwater molluscs – bivalves and gastropods;
More than 800 specimens from vertebrates representing at least 17 different species.
It was quite a disaster for the creatures involved, and a boon to modern day paleontologists.

Another fossil from the Late Cretaceous of Transylvania was Barbatodon transylvanicus. It was a small multituberculate mammal that co-existed with the dinosaurs. With its red, iron stained teeth, B. transylvanicus has beencompared to another, more recent Transylvanian inhabitant, Vlad Dracula, the inspiration for the mythical vampire Dracula. Unlike the hematophagous vampire, B. transylvanicuswas an probably an insectivorethat ate hard shelled prey. The iron oxide in its teeth appears to have been an adaptation to increase the durability of their teeth,similar to some modern rodents.

An ancient lanternfish that lived in the Paratethys Sea from the Eocene to the Oligocene epochs, fossils of Eomyctophum have been found from Italian Alps to the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. The type fossil of Eomyctophum cozlae was found in Romania in 1977 by Mihai Ciobanu.
The fossil in Figure 7 was found with another species, Sardina sardinites, a variety of sardine. Eomyctophum may have been chasing the sardine as food when both met their demise and were fossilized together.

Another creature that lived during the Maastrichtian Age of the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Romania, Eurazhdarchowas a medium-sized azhdarchidpterosaur, a flying reptile. Fossils of Eurazhdarchofrom Transylvania in Romania were described by Mátyás Vremir, Alexander W. A. Kellner, Darren Naish, and Gareth J. Dyke in 2013.

Given its complex geology, if you thought that Romania had a rich patrimony of mineral resources, you’d be right. According to the most recent USGS Mineral Yearbook for Romania, the country’s mineral resources include metals, industrial minerals, and mineral fuels (coal, crude petroleum, and natural gas). The latest (2022) statistics on mineral production in Romania from the USGS are found here.
Copper is mined at the Roșia Poieni Mine in the the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania; a geological analysis of the deposit can be found here.
Copper, gold, lead, silver, and zinc are mined at the Manaila Mine in northeast Romania.
Manganese is mined at the Vatra Dornei Mine in northeast Romania.
Some of the best stibnite (antimony sulphide) specimens come from the Herja Mine, Maramureș County.
Industrial construction materials produced in Romania include cement, gypsum, lime, sand and gravel.
Bentonite clay is produced from mines located at Valea Chioarului, Maramureș County and Orasu Nou Mine, Satu Mare County.
Feldspar is mined at the Teregova mine, Caraş-Severin County.
Salt is mined at numerous historical diggings in Romania. Once worked by convicts, they have now become tourist attractions.
Coal Mines
Both bitumous coal and lignite are mined in Romania. There are some 30 active coal mines in Romania
Oil and gas production in Romania goes back to antiquity. However, the modern petroleum industry in Romania began in 1857 with:
Crude oil production was formally recorded for the country;
The first petroleum industrial refinery, located in Ploesti, began operation; and
Bucharest became the first city in the world to have public illumination, using lamp oils.
During the wars of the 20th Century, Romania’s the oil and gas industry was a major strategic asset, especially coveted by Germany. Consequently, it was also target for destruction for those seeking to deny it to Germany: by sabotage in 1916; and by Allied bombing raids in 1943. While currently not as critical to European geopolitics, oil and gas production in Romania continues to this day.

In Romania today there are approximately: 62 oil fields in Romania, 59 onshore gas fields, and 22 offshore gas fields in the Black Sea. Associated products from oil and gas production include ammonia fertilizer and sulphuric acid.

Romania has an interesting history and looks like a good place to visit, especially if you are fan of Dracula. I particularly admire the Romanians for how they rid themselves of a noxious dictator. Spoiler, it wasn’t pretty.
As far as the mineral industry, Romania still has a lot going for it. It is a modern industrial country and although the mineral industry is well developed, there are still opportunities for further development. I expect there to be more exploration for oil and gas in the Black Sea after the current troubles in Ukraine/Russia are over.
